FAQ
Questions schools actually ask.
Haddock Education Technologies gathered the questions we hear most from teachers and IT teams across Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. Each answer links to the manufacturer's or agency's own documentation. Details vary by model, so ask your Haddock consultant about your exact setup.
Choosing a panel
What size interactive panel do we need for a classroom?
Most classroom panels come in 65", 75" and 86" sizes. Promethean's ActivPanel 9, for example, is offered in all three, each at 4K resolution. The right size depends on room depth and where the back row sits, so we measure the room before recommending one. How Haddock helps: A Haddock consultant can walk the room with you and suggest a size that works from the back row.
Do classroom panels need to be 4K?
Many current education panels are 4K (3840 × 2160). Promethean's ActivPanel 9 and SAGE's XTR panels, for example, both list 4K resolution. Specs vary by brand and model, so check the spec sheet for the exact panel you're considering.

How long does an interactive panel last?
Manufacturers rate the display backlight in hours. Promethean, for example, lists a 50,000-hour LED lifespan for ActivPanel 9. Real-world life also depends on use, heat, and keeping firmware current. Ratings vary by model, so check the spec sheet. How Haddock helps: Our free Panel Wellness Check and Managed Device Services help keep panels updated and running.
What warranty comes with a panel?
It depends on the brand and model. Promethean publishes a Warranty at a Glance matrix by product, and asks schools to register panels so the warranty can start from installation. SMART's spec sheets list what is included with each model. Ask your Haddock consultant for the warranty terms on the exact model you're quoting.
Source: Promethean Warranty at a Glance · Promethean: When does the warranty period begin?
Do we need to register our Promethean panels?
Yes, it's a good idea. Promethean explains that registering through its Registration Portal can align the warranty start with your installation date, and lists a time window for doing it. Have the serial numbers and install date handy.

Which panel brand is best for our school?
There isn't one right answer. It depends on your devices (Chromebooks, iPads, Windows), how you manage them, and what software teachers like. We work with Newline, SAGE, Promethean, ViewSonic, SMART and other leading brands, so we can match the panel to your classrooms instead of steering you to one. How Haddock helps: Ask for a side-by-side demo.

Promethean ActivPanel
Does ActivInspire still work with newer ActivPanels?
Yes. Promethean says ActivInspire licenses are included with ActivPanel 9, with the activation key on the side of the panel. On Windows, ActivPanel 9 needs ActivInspire 2.24 or higher, and the panel doesn't need ActivDriver.
Source: Promethean: ActivPanel 9 support for ActivInspire on Windows · Promethean: Explain Everything Whiteboard FAQs
What is the Explain Everything Whiteboard on ActivPanel 9, and does it cost extra?
It's a whiteboard app built into ActivPanel 9 and ActivPanel 9 Premium, included at no extra cost. It works offline and doesn't require an Explain Everything account. It appears in the Applications menu once the panel is on firmware 2.1 or later.
How do we update the firmware on an ActivPanel 9?
Open the Update app from the panel menu. If the panel is online, tap Online Update Now. If not, Promethean provides a USB update method (FAT32 drive, file placed at the root). Promethean recommends updating from Guest mode and not touching the panel until it fully restarts. How Haddock helps: Managed Device Services includes firmware and app updates.

How are ActivPanel 10 updates handled?
Promethean documents several methods: updating through a connected OPS-A2 (online or offline), a USB method, and remote updates through Promethean Admin Tools when an OPS-A2 is connected and visible there. Don't power off during an update.

Where do I find my ActivPanel's firmware version?
It depends on the model. On ActivPanel 9, press the Flame button, open Applications, then the Update app. Promethean has a support article listing the steps for each ActivPanel generation.

What is an OPS module like Promethean's OPS-A2?
OPS is a slot-in computer module for the back of a compatible panel. Promethean describes OPS-A2 as an Android computing module for ActivPanel 10, and publishes a compatibility matrix showing which OPS works with which panel.

A panel started acting up after an update. What should we do?
Check the exact firmware version first (see the Promethean article for your model), then contact the manufacturer's support or your reseller with that version number. Many districts test a firmware update on a few panels before rolling it out building-wide. How Haddock helps: Our help desk and remote troubleshooting (Managed Device Services) can take this off your plate.

Can one computer show on two ActivPanels at once?
Promethean says ActivPanels aren't designed to wirelessly mirror one computer to several panels. For two panels close together, you can run HDMI out from the first panel into the second. Touch works only on one.

Casting & connecting devices
How do students share a Chromebook screen to a Promethean panel?
Open Screen Share on the panel to get its 6-digit Panel ID. On the Chromebook, use the Promethean Screen Share sender, enter the ID and a name, and share. The teacher approves who appears from the Waiting Room, and ActivPanel 9 can show up to four devices at once.

What happened to ActivCast on Promethean panels?
Promethean replaced ActivCast with Screen Share on current firmware for ActivPanel Elements (v4.0 onward) and ActivConnect OPS-G (v2.4.2 onward). ActivCast still works where installed but is no longer updated.
Can teachers control a laptop from the panel while casting?
Sometimes. That's called touchback, and it depends on the brand and device. Promethean says Screen Share touchback works with Windows and Mac senders, not the Chrome extension or mobile devices. Newline lists touchback for iPad via AirPlay, and its connection chart shows which methods support it.

Does a SMART Board support AirPlay, Google Cast or Miracast?
SMART boards with the SMART Mirror screen share app support native AirPlay, Google Cast and Miracast, though Miracast needs newer versions. Devices generally need to be on the same network, and IT can turn native sharing on or off in settings.
Source: SMART Mirror: About · SMART Mirror: Network configuration
Why won't casting connect on our school network?
Wireless casting often depends on network setup, such as devices being on the same network or certain ports being open. Each brand publishes its own network requirements. Many schools also keep a wired HDMI or USB-C connection at the teacher station as a reliable backup. How Haddock helps: We can review the requirements with your IT team before install.

Sound, bells & paging
Why does classroom sound matter?
Students have to hear the teacher clearly to learn. Groups like ASHA point to background noise and reverberation as barriers to listening in classrooms, and the ANSI/ASA S12.60 standard sets acoustic targets for core learning spaces. Classroom audio helps keep the teacher's voice clear in every seat.
Portable voice amplifier or a classroom audio system?
A portable amplifier helps one teacher in one spot. An installed classroom audio system spreads the teacher's voice evenly through the room and can tie into panels and other sources. The right choice depends on the room and how it's used. How Haddock helps: We can assess a few rooms and recommend options.

How do we know if our bell and paging system needs upgrading?
Start with an honest look at coverage, clarity, scheduling, and how it ties into safety announcements. Haddock offers a free guide, "How Does Your Bell and Paging System Measure Up?", to help you assess your system.

How do we cut down on vape sensor false alarms?
Placement and tuning matter. Thresholds are adjustable room by room, and things like airflow, aerosols and cleaning products can affect readings. A clear response plan for staff matters as much as the hardware. How Haddock helps: We help with placement, setup and adjustment.
